Shaping of Hooks in New Caledonian Crows
I am reading Dog Days, Raven Nights so I have corvids on the brain. This is a great video demonstrating the intelligence and innovation of the New Caledonian Crows which are some of the more researched corvids. Enjoy!

This is a devastating trailer, or at least I found it to be, but I think it should be watched so people begin to understand the ecological harm plastics are doing thousands of miles from civilization. I have been following Chris Jordon’s work for a couple of years. He is famous for taking graphic pictures of baby albatross carcasses filled with the plastics their parents found in the ocean around Midway and though was food. This film continues that theme, but in video, he is able to capture the suffering before the inevitable death. It is heart wrenching, but it is truth.
This video doesn’t make much sense to me, but sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. I am skeptical though. Does anyone have any explanation of this behavior? Parrot chicks could not eat the food being offered by the kookaburras so there would be no positive outcome to any of the feeding attempts. Even if the kookaburras were trying to raise the young parrots, I would think they would get frustrated and give up when the young parrots could not accept any of their offerings.
It could of course be a fraud video, but I am not sure what the point would be as it has not been highly distributed to “fool” lots of people. What do you think?
The Drunk Scotsman (with lyrics)
A friend posted this on Facebook and I couldn’t resist reposting as it is a very amusing ballad.
If you are a birder and familiar with American birding or know someone who is, this is hilarious. If you are not afflicted, you will probably think it makes no sense.
If you liked my previous quadrotor post, then you should like this one too. And perhaps, he a bit creeped out and impressed as I certainly was. I am still a bit freaked out by the military applications, but it is a cool technology.

This is a cute though not terribly deep video dispelling several animal myths. Additionally, it made me wonder if you can play that classic game “Lemmings” online. Oh, the wonders of the internet, here it is:
This is awesome, but not so great for my time management :)
Simple Plan- Jet Lag Video
Another music video that I have been playing. This one attracts me because I never imagined that a rock band would have a hit song about jet lag. It almost seems like a theme to my life. Growing up my father was almost always suffering jet lag as he flew international for the last 20 years of his career. I can remember him just laying on the couch dazed and looking incredibly uncomfortable. Now that I live on the far side of the world and journey to the US at least once a year I am too familiar with the laying around dazed, hurting, and too tired to sleep. I hate doing it the few times a year I do it, I can’t imagine how he did it month after month, year after year. Then even when I am not suffering jet lag, the fun of time changes and living in the future are my constant companions. There are only a few hours in the day that line up well to call the US so I constantly need to be thinking about what time it is over there when I want to conduct business or contact friends and family.

This is so very wrong. I was sure it was a spoof joke, but if so then IMDB is in on the joke too. The sad thing is that no matter how wrong it may be, I may have to see it… I mean vampire movies are awesome and Lincoln was awesome so while I don’t think vampires and Lincoln sound like a winning combination, I am sure my curiosity will get the better of me.
This is a cute video taking a stand against factory farming with Willie Nelson singing a Cold Play song. Now I don’t know anything about the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation though I had heard that Chipolte was owned by McDonald’s which doesn’t come to mind as a particularly supporter of sustainable, non-factory farming system. However, according to wiki, McDonald’s fully divested in Chipolte in 2006 so the two entities are entirely separate.
This is apparently a public transportation ad, but it is too cute and funny not to share. And there is a bird… you know I can’t resist a bird.
This is really neat technology that becomes really scary technology when you start thinking about the possible military applications. Still cool to see.

Oh, this makes me want to go to Burning Man some year even more than I already did. Plus it is just cool as a stand alone retelling of one of my favorite Dr. Suess books.

Yes, I am completely looking forward to season 2, are you?

An interesting video from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology on some new research on parrots vocabulary and learning versus instinct. I thought it was well presented to explain to a wide audience the results of the research.
